Walking Holiday Feedback

With over 25 years experience in offering self guided and indeed some guide holidays along our beloved South Downs Way, we thought it best to share what others have thought about our offerings. We do get dozens of replies to feedback each season, below are a couple from each of the last few seasons.

Karen – 2017 – Hi Richard, Diana and I had a lovely weekend walking on the South Downs way! Everything you kindly organised for us was perfect. The taxi driver, the 2 accommodations and the walks! Even the weather was kind to us! We thank you for making it a stress free weekend.

Sue – 2017 – I’ve long thought about writing you to express my thanks for arranging such a delightful adventure. Everything was perfect. The weather was sunny (if a bit hot) and the accomodations were all fine; some fantastic. I especially liked your choices in Winchester (Winchester Royal Hotel), Buriton (Village Inn), Amberley (Foxleigh Barn), Steyning (Springwells), and, of course Eastbourne (THE GRAND). I am still smiling as I remember the footman at The Grand escorting me through the marbled lobby to my room while he carried my rather disreputable hat and hiking poles. The hosts at Foxleigh Barn could not have been more friendly and helpful.

I also appreciated the notes you prepared for each section of the walk with special instructions for interesting shortcuts or stops. I tried to do them all.

Everything went very smoothly. Your pacing of the trip, notes about preparation, willingness to quickly schedule my trip (and then rearrange it when I changed my mind), selection of B&B’s were all just great.

Thank you thank you for setting up a trip that I have long wanted to make and now have rich memories of. If I plan another walk in England I will surely contact you first.

Graham & Ralfie (K9) – 2017 – Hi Richard, I just wanted to say thanks for arranging our recent walk from and to Alfriston. The views were amazing, as was the weather – a truly superb section of the SDW, which Ralfie and I thoroughly enjoyed on each of the three days. The food and accommodation at the Star Inn was outstanding (very dog welcoming), and it had family connections for us. I would recommend it all – thanks again.

Pat – 2017 – Just to let you know we had a brilliant time and loved all the accommodation. The weather was perfect and we ended with a swim in the sea ! Pat and Judith

Roy – 2016 – I can honestly say that the whole experience was one of the best I have had in the whole of my life. Your organisation went like clockwork, the accommodation, the pick ups and drop offs, all of it was faultless. I made notes in the evenings, and enjoy reading them, although I can remember practically every step of the way, plus the incidents in the evenings etc. At the start, I did feel quite intimidated at the enormity of the task ahead, but once the first day was completed it became easier, bearing in mind that I will be 74 in August!

Gill & Kate 2016 – Just a quick email to say how much we enjoyed our holiday and to thank you for making it one we will remember for a very long time. We are only sad about one thing – it ended all too soon. We met some really lovely people along the way and our hosts, without exception, gave us a very warm welcome. We were joined by a friend at the Grand yesterday when we treated ourselves to a cream tea, which we thoroughly enjoyed; although the best one along the way was to be had at the Steyning Tea Rooms – homemade rhubarb scones and rhubarb jam – delicious. We are both already weary of London and are longing for the beautiful countryside we have left behind us.

Philip & Judith 2016First of all, it was lovely meeting you, albeit briefly just as we were leaving Downsview B and B! Just a quick email to say how much we thoroughly enjoyed the South Downs Way walk and to thank you for having arranged everything so brilliantly. The walk itself was fantastic, helped incredibly by perfect weather the whole duration! It was also the best way marked walk we have been on which makes for such a more relaxing time. The accommodation en route was excellent and we loved the variety of places we stayed in. The hosts in every place were between most welcoming and exceptionally welcoming! The taxi transfers and luggage transfers all worked a treat too. We had a super couple of nights in Eastbourne at the end of the walk and managed to get tickets for the West End Touring production of The Bodyguard! A great finish to a most memorable and enjoyable holiday. We met some super people en-route too. So thank you once again, Richard for all the arranging. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend yourself and the walk. All the very best and who know, we may be in contact with you again!

Jill – 2015 – South Done Way! Kenny and I finished around 2:30 today. My feet are saying 200 not 100 miles. Had unforgettable experience and we’ve appreciated all your efforts. Enjoyed meeting/chatting with our hosts and all the folks we met onSDW. For our celebratory meal tonight, we had one of our best dinners at Little Italy here in Eastbourne, in case you like Italian. Love the Grand and sorry we couldn’t meet. Thanks again, Richard. Best, Jill.

Rosemarie – 2015 – Richard, back at home for nearly a week and at work again, we feel that walking the South Downs would be a lot better. This is not at least due to your very good organisation. The B+B all were great in their special way, real stylish like Giffard and Pelham House, the unbelievable Malt House, host were very friendly, particulary Suzanne, Pete and Lin, Lesley and Ron and the dear waitress Lydia at the Star Inn. One of our best hollidays ever. Rosmarie + Wolfgang

Guy – 2014 – Good to meet you in Upper Beeding and you will be pleased to hear the “survivors” had a fantastic final couple of days even managing to dodge all the rain showers and finish in a blaze of sunshine. We have had a great week and thank you for your help in putting the programme and itinerary together. With kind regards, Guy and the team.

Richard – 2014 Just to let you know that we finished the trail at 3.30 today, were picked up by John and are now on the train on our way back home. Fabulous trip with really good weather. Not a drop of rain from start to finish. Your organisation was superb. Thank you for all your help. All the best, Richard

Nick – 2013 – A big thanks for organising our South Downs trip at such short notice and also thanks to you and Keith for your help along the way .We were so lucky with the weather, had a good week and enjoyed the Downs experience. We finished the walk at the Kiosk about 2.30pm and had a very good last day. Accommodation along the route was very comfortable and the couple at Hobbs cottage were very kind when I apparently arrived like death warmed up. Thank you both and we shall have no problem recommending Pear Tree Travel to any friends. With best wishes to you both, Maureen and Nick.

David – 2013 – Richard, sorry for the delay in replying to your letter of 22 August but we have been away again. We have been on many walks around the UK and elsewhere and can absolutely say that this was one of the best and certainly the overall standard of accommodation was far superior to that on The Coast to Coast, West Highlands Way, Ring of Kerry etc. We were lucky with the weather which helps but the arrangements and everything was very efficiently managed. We have already recommended your company to three likely couples in Guernsey so hope that translates into some business! Kind regards, David.

Geoff – 2012 – Richard, I was just reflecting on our year and remembering what a wonderful time Janet and I had walking the South Downs Way. Thanks for what you do to help make trips like that possible – getting the bags moved, the very fine accommodation organized, and helping with the weather. Okay, maybe you have no control over the weather, but everything else you did was great. Hope that the year was a success for you; all the best for Christmas and 2013. Thanks again, Geoff.

Nicky – 2012 – Carolyn & I just wanted to say a big thank you for a super week on the South Downs Way. The accommodation, baggage transfer & organisation were excellent, and it was a luxury to just have to get from A to B each day & only worry about what to order at the pub each evening! We met some delightful people on the way & were incredibly lucky with the weather. It was lovely to see the countryside subtly change as we moved from Hampshire through Sussex, and to be accompanied by some glorious wildlife and history. We were guided by your very helpful notes & also found some great places to eat in Cocking & Bramber, whatever calories we burnt whilst walking I’m afraid we put straight back on!  Thank you from us both & our tired but happy feet…. Nicky.
